Drive down Highway 111 in early August and the shopping centers look like they've been evacuated. Reservation apps ping open tables at 7 p.m. on a Saturday. The rental cars are gone. If you already live here, none of this is news.
What has changed, quietly, is that Indian Wells now gives residents more reasons to stay in town during the slow months than it did even two summers ago. The city's biggest resort finished a full brand overhaul and reopened with a restaurant that keeps locals' hours. The Tennis Garden's flagship dining room runs year round. The Grand Hyatt has a water park most residents forget belongs to them. This post is a working map of that layer, written for the people who own the driveway, not the ones renting the villa.
The Miramonte is now something different, and residents should re-check it
The property most locals still call "the Miramonte" reopened in late 2023 as Tommy Bahama Miramonte Resort & Spa, the first resort concept for the Tommy Bahama brand, following a $20 million renovation and redesign that pairs island living with desert luxury. If you looked in during the transition and wrote it off, look again. The bones are the same. Almost everything on top of them is new.
The transformed resort sits against the Santa Rosa Mountains with 215 guestrooms and reimagined villa suites woven into 11 acres of olive trees, fragrant citrus groves and flower gardens. The gardens are the reason to know the property even if you never book a room. They are also the reason the new signature restaurant works the way it does.
That restaurant is Grapefruit Basil, and it is worth understanding on its own terms. Grapefruit Basil was developed exclusively for the resort, named after the Tommy Bahama cocktail and paying homage to the citrus trees found across the property, with interiors anchored by hues of white and green with yellow accents and live Meyer lemon trees inside. The indoor/outdoor dining venue serves brunch and dinner seven days a week with coastal-inspired dishes and a seasonal craft cocktail menu. Translated into resident terms: it is a walk-in-friendly bar with grown-up food, an all-weather patio, and a menu that does not require the tasting-menu commitment of the country club dining rooms most of you already belong to.
If you have out-of-town family arriving before Labor Day and you do not want them to see your actual kitchen, the resort is also running a summer promotion: a daily spa treatment, island-inspired dining, and special summer rates starting at $199 weekdays, valid for stays from July 8 through August 31, 2026. That is a useful number to know when your sister-in-law wants to fly in for four nights.
Where locals are actually eating this month

A note on Vue Grille & Bar: visitors appreciate the views of the golf course and the relaxed, casual atmosphere, and the restaurant's setting next to the golf course makes it a convenient choice, with popular dishes like the bone-in fried pork chop scallopini topped with arugula, sweet peppers, potatoes, and balsamic vinegar. It is one of the more forgiving spots in the city for a last-minute six-top.
The Nobu situation is the one most residents underuse. The Japanese restaurant located in Stadium 2 is open year-round, serving up its world-famous dishes outside the annual tournament dates. March is when it belongs to visiting players and hospitality suites. August is when it belongs to you.
The Grand Hyatt is not just for weddings
The Grand Hyatt Indian Wells Resort & Villas quietly finished its own multi-year refresh, and the two amenities most useful to residents in August are the water park and the spa.
HyTides is the water park hidden in plain sight on the property. HyTides Water Park overflows with family-friendly adventure with water slides, a lazy river, and an adults-only Oasis Pool. The scale is real: guests slide down the two 210-foot chutes, meander down the lazy river, and if loads of children having fun isn't your idea of a serene vacation, head to the Oasis pool, the adults-only spot with cabanas. Day-guest access is worth asking about specifically if you have grandkids in town for the week and cannot face another afternoon at the community pool.
Agua Serena Spa runs a day-pass program that residents forget exists. Spa Day Passes at Agua Serena Spa include full access to serene lounges, eucalyptus steam rooms, hot and cold plunge pools, and tranquil wellness spaces. If your kitchen is being redone, or you just want three hours in an air-conditioned room that is not your own, this is the play.

The Tennis Garden is not dark in August
The BNP Paribas Open is the reason most people know the address. The 2026 Indian Wells Open, called the BNP Paribas Open for sponsorship reasons, was the 52nd edition of the men's event and 37th of the women's event, classified as an ATP Tour Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 event, with the men's and women's main draws taking place from March 4 to March 15, 2026 on outdoor hardcourts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. For eleven months of the year the grounds are a public sports facility. The venue offers 29 courts and seating for up to 16,000 guests in the largest stadium, and is home to the BNP Paribas Open, the largest combined men's and women's tennis tournament in the world.
If you are a member of the club programs, you already know this. If you are not, the point is that the practice courts and the Nobu are both available to you in a way they simply are not during the second week of March. A late-August evening on the grounds is one of the better resident-only experiences in the city.
The pattern here is not about summer specials. It is that Indian Wells has built a year-round operating layer on top of a market that used to shut down in July. Residents who only use the city between November and May are leaving the better half of that layer unused.
If you are going to leave the house this week
Pick one thing you have not actually done in the last twelve months. The Grapefruit Basil bar on a Wednesday. A grounds walk at the Tennis Garden at 7 p.m. A Saturday morning lap of the lazy river with the grandkids before they fly home. A day pass at Agua Serena on the afternoon your HVAC guy is at the house.
The city is quiet on purpose in August. The people who program it are not.
